Dr. Madhavi Reddy

Volunteer Ophthalmologist

Dr. Madhavi G. Reddy is a board-certified ophthalmologist with decades of experience in comprehensive eye care, academic teaching, and global ophthalmology. She is currently a partner and practicing ophthalmologist at South Texas Eye Centers in Brownsville, Texas, where she has been providing expert eye care since 1999.

The first cataract surgery she did was in an outreach in a remote town in South India when she was a resident. A memorable mission where they screened hundreds of patients and operated late into the night. “Doing good and having fun,” is what she remembers from her first humanitarian mission!

After completing the residency at Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital in Hyderabad Dr. Reddy moved to the United States and persevered to become a board certified comprehensive ophthalmologist in the United States after a Masters in Vision Sciences at University of Houston, a residency in Internal Medicine at UT Health-Houston and another residency in ophthalmology at Texas Tech. Once she settled into practice, in the underserved south Texas, she began to explore volunteer opportunities. Meeting Dr. Brown at the Academy and connecting with SEE was the perfect stepping stone for her global ophthalmology career.

Since 2004, she has traveled as a SEE volunteer eye surgeon to Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, Roatan, Ecuador, Peru, Vanuatu, Cambodia, Myanmar, India, Ghana, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Liberia. She has visited and studied the eye care models of Aravind in Madurai, LV Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad, Tilganga in Nepal, Ace Global in Honduras, State Eye hospital in Namibia and Vision Institute in Madagascar. As a board member of SEE, she has been actively involved in sustainable training initiatives including connecting with teaching and training programs, mentoring and sponsoring qualified medical graduates. Recently she set up an international retina fellowship at LV Prasad Eye Institute to train retina fellows from LMIC.

On the home front, as the pandemic hit especially the vulnerable and uninsured population in Brownsville, TX, she collaborated with a local Federally Qualified Health Center, New Horizon Health Center to establish an affordable eye clinic where the indigent can obtain eye exams and laser treatments at a minimal cost. She also offers free cataract surgeries with the help of a grant from SEE.

Dr. Reddy enjoys teaching medical students—she is affiliated with the UT Health Rio Grande Valley School Of Medicine and the UT Health School of Public Health- Hispanic Research Center.

In her free time, Madhavi enjoys traveling, hiking, planting trees and writing poetry. She says friends and family keep her energized and inspired.
