Dr. Madhavi G. Reddy is a board-certified ophthalmologist with decades of experience in comprehensive eyecare, academic teaching, and global medical outreach. She is currently a partner and practicing ophthalmologist at South Texas Eye Centers in Brownsville, Texas, where she has been providing expert eyecare since 1999.
Dr. Reddy’s medical journey began in Hyderabad, India, where she earned her M.B.B.S. from Gandhi Medical College in 1985. She specialized in Ophthalmology at Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, Osmania University, from 1986 to 1989 before moving to the United States. She further honed her expertise through an Internal Medicine residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston (1992–1994) and an Ophthalmology residency at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (1994–1997). She also earned a Master of Science in Physiological Optics and Vision Sciences from the University of Houston in 1994.
In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Reddy is deeply committed to medical education and research. She serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at UTHealth Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine and as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Hispanic Research Center, UTHealth School of Public Health in Brownsville. Previously, she was a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at UT Health-San Antonio’s Regional Academic Health Center from 2001 to 2015.
Beyond her professional roles, Dr. Reddy has dedicated her career to serving underserved communities. Since 2004, she has been an active volunteer with SEE International, participating in cataract surgery missions across Latin America, Africa, Asia and the United States. She also leads ophthalmology services as a volunteer at the New Horizon Health Clinic in Brownsville, providing affordable eyecare and surgery to uninsured and at-risk populations. Her commitment to global eye health extends to collaborations with teaching and training programs, connecting, mentoring and sponsoring qualified medical graduates including setting up an International Retina Fellowship at LV Prasad Eye Institute in India.
Dr. Reddy’s contributions to ophthalmology include research on retinal electrophysiology, corneal vascularization, and vitamin A deficiency. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Women in Ophthalmology and SEE International. Certified in Wilderness Medicine, she is the team doctor for the company Felis Creations. Fluent in English, Telugu, Hindi, and Spanish, she continues to make a profound impact in both clinical and humanitarian ophthalmology.
