Growing up in the Wisconsin instilled core values and beliefs of hard work and selflessness in Dr. Brian Haugen. After earning a degree in Finance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he attended medical school there. This is when he had the opportunity to volunteer in the Philippines during his medical school rotations, which was his first exposure to international ophthalmology.
This experience allowed Dr. Haugen to think outside the box when in the operating room and got him hooked on helping people in other parts of the world. After establishing a practice in Northern California, he was lucky enough to become a part of Great Shape ICare missions starting in 2014. Together they started performing cataract surgeries that year in addition to the free eye clinics offered in the past. In collaboration with local ophthalmologists, they continue to perform cataract and MIGS surgeries to improve the lives of the people of Jamaica.
ICare has expanded missions throughout the Caribbean. It has even spawned a sister group, Sight is a Right, that has expanded its reach even further into South America and Africa (starting in 2025). Dr. Haugen has felt privileged and honored to help people in Jamaica who do not have access to healthcare and to form lasting friendships with the local doctors.
