Restoring Sight in Namibia

Last year, SEE International supported its third surgical program in Oshikuku, Namibia, bringing essential eyecare to low-income and underserved patients suffering from cataracts and other vision conditions. Led by the renowned Dr. Helena Ndume and a dedicated local team, the week-long program was held at Oshikuku Mission Hospital. Traveling U.S. ophthalmologist Dr. Barry Wolstan joined the team, and together they performed 540 sight-restoring surgeries!

Meet Eliater

Among those who received life-changing care was Eliater Gabriel, a driver from Oshikoyo Village in the Omusati Region. For months, Eliater struggled with vision loss in his right eye, making it difficult and dangerous to do his job: “I am a driver. From January until now, my eye couldn’t see,” he shared. “It gave me trouble when I wanted to go somewhere because I couldn’t use one of my eyes to see, and the one that could see was strained as it was the only one that was functional.”

Determined to find a solution, Eliater sought help at Oshakati State Hospital, where he learned about SEE International’s program: “They referred me to Oshikuku Hospital to get checked by SEE doctors,” he explained. There, Eliater received sight restoring surgery, completely free of cost. He has since regained his independence and the ability to drive without fear.

Stories like Eliater’s highlight the profound impact of accessible eyecare. Through programs like this one, individuals facing preventable blindness can reclaim their vision and their future. We are so grateful to our medical volunteers, partners, and donors who make this vital work possible!
