SEE’s 2021 Humanitarian of the Year Awards honor the outstanding dedication and achievement of volunteer ophthalmologists and partner organizations that are committed to ending preventable blindness. We are proud to introduce you to this year’s honorees.
Dr. Kevin Barber – Traveling U.S. Ophthalmologist
Dr. Kevin Barber is a board-certified ophthalmologist with Central Florida Eye Specialists in DeLand, Florida.
As the president of the Advanced Center for Eyecare Global, Dr. Barber has a strong passion for helping restore sight to those in need. He is driven by his hopes to use his expertise to transform the lives of individuals living with preventable blindness and visual impairments.
Dr. Barber has been a SEE volunteer since 2017 and has traveled on 8 international sight-restoring programs in Honduras, where he has treated over 300 patients and performed 275 surgeries.
Dr. Thomas Baah – International Host Ophthalmologist
Dr. Thomas Baah is an ophthalmologist based in Accra, Ghana.
As the founder of Save the Nation’s Sight Clinic in Ghana, Dr. Baah has spent a large portion of his life providing humanitarian eyecare services in rural areas of need. He often hosts international clinics in partnership with SEE, where he works tirelessly to restore sight to as many individuals as possible.
Dr. Baah is also a renowned educator, as he also partners with SEE to train international ophthalmologists in the Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS) technique. He therefore plays a large role in creating more sustainable eyecare systems across the globe.
Dr. Randall Goodman – Santa Barbara Vision Care Ophthalmologist
Dr. Randall Goodman is a board-certified ophthalmologist and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
He has authored two ophthalmology textbooks and numerous journal articles, book chapters and scientific abstracts, and serves as editorial reviewer for two medical publishers. As a board member for SEE International, he not only travels to use his expertise for international programs, but he has recently began providing free sight-restoring surgeries at our local Santa Barbara Vision Care clinics.
Dr. Karen Garrety – SEE Optometrist
Dr. Karen Garrety has been in practice in the state of California for over 27 years.
With a passion for treating vision with care, she graduated in 1991 from the Southern California College of Optometry. As a SEE optician, Dr. Garrety provides her services to patients referred by SEE. Dr. Garrety’s favorite part of working with SEE is having the opportunity to help others while working with a team of dedicated individuals that are unified by the same values – that sight is freedom, and that vision shouldn’t be a privilege.
Sansum Ophthalmology – Community Partner
Sansum Clinic is the oldest and largest nonprofit, outpatient healthcare provider on the California Central Coast.
Through their partnership with SEE, Sansum Clinic provides free eyecare services that are normally covered by health insurance, to patients referred SEE. Established community partnerships like this allow us to provide a full continuum of care to our patients beyond initial screenings.
