The Gift of Sight and Self Confidence

Maria has lived with a weak right eye that also turns inward since she was a child in Mexico. In addition to severely diminished vision in her right eye, she has endured emotional and psychological effects, including low self-esteem. She felt self-conscious and avoided many social situations. A mother to four children, Maria even felt uncomfortable dropping her kids off at school. Unable to afford treatment on housecleaning wages, Maria lived with her eye condition for decades.

When Maria moved to Santa Barbara, she was referred to the Santa Barbara Vision Care Program, a community program run by SEE International. After an initial consultation and assessment, she was thrilled to learn that she was eligible for free surgery. Mark Silverberg, M.D., a volunteer ophthalmologist with the program, donated his time and expertise to surgically correct Maria’s right eye. The 2- hour operation was completed successfully at Cottage Eye Center, which donated the use of surgical facilities.

At the age of 38, Maria is a new person. “I am still getting used to my improved vision and new appearance,” said Maria. “I see better and feel better because I don’t feel like people are staring at me anymore. I am doing more things out of the house now.” In addition, the positive experience that Maria had throughout her eye surgery has helped her overcome fears about doctors and hospitals.  Explained Maria, “I am very thankful for the program. It has given me two important gifts—the gift of sight and the gift of self confidence.”
